macOS 27.2 Update: What's New, What Apple Changed Quietly, and Should You Install It?

macOS Golden Gate 27.2 landed on October 26, and it's the first big update since macOS 27 shipped in September. There was no 27.1 for the Mac, so if you've been waiting for the first proper update, this is it.

Apple's release notes are short and mostly about Siri. The changes you'll actually notice in your first ten minutes, like the new volume overlay and a black-and-white Music icon, aren't in them at all. Here's the quick version of both halves, plus what to check before you click Update.

The numbers to know first

  • Download: roughly 19 to 22 GB, so clear some space before you start.
  • Security: 263 CVEs fixed, with WebKit (the engine behind Safari) as the biggest group.
  • Storage after updating: if free space looks low the next day, a temporary Time Machine snapshot is the likely reason. It should clear within 24 hours.
  • Older Macs: Apple also shipped macOS Tahoe 26.7.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 the same day.

What Apple told you: Siri gets a memory

Siri can now recall earlier conversations, so you can ask about something it told you last week. It can also draw on more of your own data: photos attached in Messages, attendees on your Calendar events and voicemails, plus better results from your Safari history and Reading List.

The setting to know is Excluded Apps. It's one place to choose which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access. Spend a minute there before you start relying on the new memory.

Siri AI, still labelled beta, now also works in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Apple notes it isn't available in mainland China.

What Apple didn't put in the notes

  • A new segmented volume and brightness overlay when you press the keyboard keys.
  • A new battery icon in the menu bar and a refreshed Low Power Mode look.
  • Apple Music's icon is now black and white, and its red accents have turned blue.
  • Refreshed icons for Safari, Photos, Mail, the App Store, Reminders, Preview and Finder, and a blue-cube icon for installer packages.
  • Rounded corners on Finder's drag-to-select box.

Testers also found new gesture-recognition code during the betas. Two days after 27.2 shipped, Apple announced a MacBook Pro with Touch, which ships November 6.

Should you update?

For most people, yes, after a backup. The security fixes alone make it worth it. Give it a few days if you depend on an external display (Apple lists a known issue where display settings and arrangement might not be restored correctly), if your Mac is managed by work, or if a work-critical app hasn't confirmed support yet.

The plan is short: back up with Time Machine, make room, update from System Settings > General > Software Update, then check your display arrangement and your Excluded Apps setting.
